CAPTCHA Crisis
We have been relying on CAPTCHA for quite sometime to hold spammers at bay. If spammers find out a way to break in CAPTCHA then many social media web sites as well as blogs will face huge problems. According to Virtual Blight, this is not too far from reality. The article is written by Richard DeMillo, the Dean of Computer Science at Georgia Tech and former Chief Technology Officer for Hewlett-Packard.
Russian researchers have claimed to create algorithms that can read CAPTCHA screens 30 to 35% of the time accurately. As of now, these tools are at the disposal of a few top notch people. But with time, it is logical to expect that they will be widely distributed. And when this happens god help us! A hit rate of 30% to 35% is treasure for the spammers. They will have a field day.
This is a matter for great concern to the entire search marketing community. This considerable increase in SPAM will result in making the web much less effective as a medium. The web security system needs to be enhanced to a great extent. Although we still have time, but it is essential to realize that spammers have the capability of ruining the web.
