Google to make searching for photos easier

After its joint plans with Adobe to make Flash content searchable, Google now plans to work on making image searches organised, easier and more effective. This has been revealed by the firm’s Director of Product Management for Consumer Search Properties, R.J. Pittman, who talked of their plans of making trillions of images on the web more organised and effectively searchable.

Google wants to index photos by using their planned image processing and visual search technology as compared to their current process of indexing photos primarily by text and other metadata. A mention of this was made by Mr. Pittman in the interview to Panoramio, a web-based photo uploading website with a geo-tagging feature, now acquired by Google.

The purpose of making image searches organised apart from making Flash content searchable is obviously monetisation of their properties and processes.

Panoramio asks users to organise images by making use of tags (a form of metadata), that allow searchers to locate images concerning a certain topic like a place name or a specific subject matter.
