The NHS trust in Wales has upgraded its laboratory information system at nine locations. This upgrade is the part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s programme under a £1 million contract with Informing Healthcare, signed in September 2007.

The system up-gradation by iSOFT will improve patient care through better application of IT. The version will improve performance and enhance resilience of the system. Ceredigion and Mid Wales NHS Trusts’ up-gradation marks the completion of the Welsh Assembly Government’s programme.

Paul Richards, managing director of iSOFT UK and Ireland, gave the credit for project completion on time to the close co-operation between iSOFT and the staff at each trust. North West Wales NHS Trust was the first to be upgraded under the programme.

The Laboratory Systems Manager Ian Kilbourn informs that the system is quite robust and it has brought down the information collection time from hours to a few minutes. According to him, the system has provided very high degrees of resilience to their administrative task, which is so vital for the clinical care of the patients. The existing pathology systems updated with new hardware and system software would meet the demands of modern pathology services.
