MySpace to back up all messages to an individual user’s local machine
MySpace has chosen to integrate Google Gears into its own messaging system that will back up all messages to an individual user’s local machine and result in very fast search as well as sorting. This is possibly the largest third party implementation of Google Gears and also the first time the ‘search and sort’ mail functionality has been provided on MySpace.
Google Gears, which is now being known as simply ‘Gears’, is largely known as an open source project, which allows third party developers offline access to their respective browser applications. Applications, such as Zimbraand Zoho have integrated Gears in this way as well as the search engine’s own Google Reader. (Zimbra actually makes use of Mozilla Prism).
However, MySpace is not that concerned with offline access in this case (they have not turned the feature on yet). Instead, the networking site is leveraging the framework to make its messaging service that previously did not allow searching, sorting or other basic organisation techniques, into a much handier feature.
