Now a plant has a blog
It has long been known and scientifically accepted that talking to plants can help in their nurturing and growing, but have you ever tried to imagine what they would perhaps say in response? A plant in Japan now has its own blog, which may well help you understand a plant’s mind and what goes on inside it.
Midori-san, a 40cm potted plant placed on a cafe counter in Tokyo, believe it or not, blogs every day. This it does with the help of a sensor which measures electric signals. A computer algorithm translates them into words. The plant is commonly known as a ‘sweetheart plant’ owing to its leaf shape.
“We were interested initially in what the feelings of plants are and what they are reacting to?” stated Satoshi Kuribayashi, a researcher who is involved in the project at Keio University, Japan.
The electronic signals on the surface of the plant’s heart-shaped leaves that react to light and human touch get measured by a sensor attached to it. This data is then sent to a computer.
The computer makes use of an algorithm and translates the signal data into text that is automatically posted on Midori-san’s daily blog. For instance, one of the postings states:
“Today was a sunny day, and I was able to sunbathe a lot. I had quite a bit of fun today.”
