A new study done by the University of Minnesota has concluded that social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace help develop critical creative, technological and communication skills. In fact, researchers have referred to social networks as being ‘educational’ in nature.

According to Christine Greenhow, a learning technologies researcher from the University’s College of Education and Human Development, students who use social networking websites acquire the skills needed to be successful in today’s competitive world.

Students using Facebook were more likely to develop a positive attitude towards using technology systems and customising content. They also taught skills to visualise online design and layout faster, and were also seen to practice the safe as well as responsible use of information and technology, according to the findings of the study. It also showed that even students from low income groups were technically equipped.

As per the new study, almost 94 per cent of students surveyed use the internet. Among them, 82 per cent use it at home. Roughly 77 per cent have social-networking profiles.
