Regional search engine Naver’s popularity soars
Many regional search engines have come up since last few years, but most have met with limited success. One such exception is a search engine called Naver.com, which originated from South Korea. Taken from the English word “navigator” ‘Naver’ was launched in 1999 as the first portal to provide search services in the country.
Web users searching from Naver, can view their results in different categories. Unlike others search engines, which lists their results, Naver categories them instead to the different types of headings.
The Financial Times reports that, Naver attracts 16 million unique users per day, generating a combined total of one billion page views and commanding in excess 77% of the Internet search market in the country. Also according to comScore figures, it has proved to be so popular in S.Korea, that it has become the 5th largest portal.
