Relona claims to improve search relevance

It’s just a start-up but Relona has demonstrated with statistics that there is still scope for a lot of improvement in the search engine market.

Relona has come up with a technology that challenges the relevance of the search results given by the big players. There is an enormous amount of content on the web and Relona’s technology is based on the basic theory that with other search engines, users have to enter more keywords so that all the content can be thoroughly searched to get the desired results. The relevance of long queries is lesser to the relevance of smaller queries with the major search engines. Relona on the other hand gets their algorithm to adjust the emphasis of words in the query and does what users do manually, using synonyms to convey the same meaning. The technology Relona uses for its search, “guesses” what the user wants by adjusting the emphasis on different terms entered in the query.

Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Ask.com search results when combined together with Relona’s Intent based algorithm have better relevance. Following are the results:

  • MSN live: improve in relevance by 20% for two or more keywords.
  • Ask.com: improve in relevance by 25% for two or more keywords.
  • Yahoo!: improve in relevance by 35% for two or more keywords and thereby making it 5% more relevant than market leader Google.

The analysis was done without any direct integration with the search engines.
