Speed up action for migrating to the net’s ‘new addressing system’
Efforts and action for migrating Europe to the net’s ‘new addressing system’ has to be done at a faster pace, points out the European Commission. This alarming ‘call to action’ is given in a plan that has been dispatched to the European Parliament with a timely reminder to governments and leading websites in the region to take charge of the migration. It has warned that internet-based innovation could even get derailed since the current pool of addresses has almost been used up.
The plan has a target of 25 per cent of the European Union net users to be utilising the new system in two years time.
EU Commissioner for the information society Viviane Reding noted in a statement unveiling the plan:
This is very much a case of a stitch in time saves nine.
Ms Reding stated futuristic technologies already being adopted like smart tags, heating systems and intelligent street lighting were already projected for boosting demand for IP addresses at least 1,000-fold, perhaps beyond the current system’s capability to cope.
