Microsoft’s new operating system (OS) version will incorporate multi-touch features, serving as an able alternative to the mouse. Slated to be unveiled next year this new fingertip interface will allow users to paint pictures, trace routes on maps, shrink as well as enlarge photos, and play the piano.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates informed at the All Things Digital conference:

The way all of us interact with the system will totally change. Almost all the interaction is now (happening through) keyboard-mouse. However, the role of speech, vision, ink and all of those things will be huge over years to come.

Windows 7 would involve exciting and innovative forms of interaction as well as communication. According to industry watchers, Microsoft is hoping that Windows 7 will be able to change the way users interact with computer in the future.

Touch is quickly and clearly becoming a common way of interacting with devices and software.

Touch-enabled surfaces are popping up everywhere comprising laptop, cell phones, remote controls, touch pads, GPS devices and more.
