UK lags behind in taking to Open Source
The country is far behind in the use of open source, in spite of the fact that it is now accepted as the best means of producing and consuming software. The director of industry body OpenForum Europe, Graham Taylor, said he would blame this (lagging behind) on low quality business decisions, leading to vendor lock-in, especially among public bodies.
As per the research, almost up to 90 per cent of public administration bodies do not have the freedom or ability to choose their IT solutions. This is because they have already committed themselves to applications that are not supported on other operating systems. Yet another reason is that they do not have any avenues of moving their data to other applications.
The administrative machinery has failed in terms of supporting Open Source. Notwithstanding this dismal record, Open Source adaptation is on its way up. The movement is no longer considered an anti-software-industry establishment. In fact, people are no longer worried of using open source. They understand that intellectual property problems are as bad as those in proprietary software.
