Yahoo! updates and upgrades mobile search function
Yahoo!, one of the most popular Internet search engines, has upgraded its mobile phone software oneSearch. It has added new features to this software, such as to allow voice queries and provide more information in search results. Introduced at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas, this new version will enable Web publishers to integrate the search program into their mobile sites just the way they do with personal computer Web pages.
Additionally, it also has a Search Assist function, which provides faster input with the help of predictive text completion and contextual recommendation, saving the time spent on entering the search query. Plus, Yahoo! is planning to partner with vlingo, a speech-recognition company, to offer a voice recognition service. This will help Yahoo! customers search for any information through a voice application. The firm expects that the feature will produce a much improved user experience, reducing the frustration of keying in mobile queries, and helping in boosting its mobile search volumes.
In addition, the firm is set to introduce idle-screen search, which will place the oneSearch box on the home screen of the Yahoo! customer’s phones. The voice enabled oneSearch is available for selected Blackberry devices including the 8800 series, Curve, and Pearl in the US.
